Starting the cladding

It was another beautiful spring day, warm and sunny. I finished the cladding preparation and got the first few cladding boards up.

All the windows (and doors)

Saturday morning came, and Angie Norman, John and I had the windows and doors in in no time.

By the end of the afternoon Angie Norman had landscaped around the front of the extension, making it considerably tidier.

More windows

This wee beauty is a last minute addition to the build (thanks again to Hugh Parsons http://hughparsonsdesign.com/) in the south gable and catching all the afternoon sun.

The reveals have been put around the first window here.

Windows

The first windows went in today. Two velux windows, the shower-room window and this screen which is pictured below. Saturday is the big day for the rest of the windows and doors when Cnocan Construction get involved.

Insulating the exterior

Saturday tea-time (9th March) and that's 95% of the exterior insulated.

Another week's progress....

We've now had at least 3 weeks of dry weather in the Ross of Mull, a few tiny spits of rain in the wind at the end of last week, but a great spell for building - no excuses then...

A buttress to the old, old house and then lime rendering applied to the exposed gable. A great job by two local contractors (who I won't identify until I get their permission). It looks fantastic and should compliment the larch cladding which will be opposite it.

One day last week I cut out the 2 bedroom and 2 bathroom windows, filling the place with light but I boarded them up again in case the rain comes before the windows and doors arrive.

Another view of the buttress along the back of the extension.

That's most of the roof formed and ready for the sheeting - when it arrives.

The Gentle Light That Wakes Me

I spent time this morning enjoying the winter sunlight coming through the back door and the Velux window openings in the roof (post title borrowed from Phil Cunningham). What a fantastic day for the start of March.

If you look closely you will see Staffa on the horizon.

And the evening light - photo taken at 6.15pm.

End of February

The roof is mainly formed and complete now, meaning I can use the inside of the building for storing tools etc which is very useful.

Time marching on, roof closing in.

It's been dry all week and hopefully the roof will be sheeted and the roof-shield laid on it by the end of tomorrow so I can back to Kilmuir for a few days.

Half a roof

The rafters on the first side of the roof went up this afternoon. What a beautiful sunset it was too.

Washed away

Torrential rain for the last few hours has led to us being surrounded by streams of water; some serious surface drainage required around the top of the garden.

Ridge Beam

With some assistance the kerto ridge beam went up - 3 separate beams bolted together.

South Gable

The south gable went up in sections as the drizzle settled in.

The ground floor

A pretty wild day but that's all the ground floor panels up now.

Taking Shape

The first panels that went up survived the 29/30th January gales and the last two days has seen great dry and relatively calm days to get some more of the kit up.

First Pics of 2013

I arrived just before the Old New Year and it has taken until Burns' birthday to have any pictures worth posting on a blog. Anyway, after the sole plate went on the first panels went up today (Saturday).
